This problem was due to playfield bumpers having loose screws and rotating into the bumper skirts. That set off the bumper continually. Tightened all playfield bumper mounting screws.
Some switch gets stuck, locking on the score solenoid. That causes it to heat up enough to create a burning smell. Poking at the bumpers fixed it for a bit, but it happened again.

Cleaned backbox switches. Messing around with them does not change anything
Cleaned solenoid interiors and shafts in back box, problem persists.
