Wrong machine, closing problem
Assumed this was an alignment issue with the left flipper solenoid so i shut the machine off and attempted to reallign. Honestly the alignment was already pretty perfect.
I did notice something unusual though. After several minutes of machine being off the left flipper solenoid remained warm to the touch while the right one was cold.
Took a thermal image and confirmed the left flipper solenoid remains substantially hotter than the rest of the stuff on the bottom of the playfield after ~ 10 min powered off.
Not sure how it is possible that the solenoid could remain partially energized when power to the machine is off, but that seems like the story the picture tells.
Tightened the screws on the ball lift, it’s no longer getting stuck.
Pleasantly, it was a new problem, so I think the S relay fix worked.
This time it was the R relay. The way it’s supposed to work is that when the S relay is triggered, the R solenoid powers up, latching the R relay on until the machine is turned off again.
The solenoid was getting power, but it wasn’t quite strong enough to pull the plate in and trigger the switches. Looking more closely, I saw there was a rivet on the solenoid plate. It was not quite aligned with the vertical fin it was supposed to make contact with. I slightly adjusted the fin and it started working again.

Used Dremel with buffer attachment to polish faces and edges of S relay plates. Readjusted bottom solenoid while the startup cycle was running until it terminated properly. Photo and video show correct alignment.
